Microdosing vs Macrodosing… Which is right for you?
When it comes to psilocybin mushrooms and their benefits, there are a few ways in which you can incorporate them into your life, microdosing and macrodosing. As someone who has experimented with both methods for the purpose of self growth and healing, I feel as if I can provide some insight based on my experiences. As it stands currently however I like to incorporate both methods into my life as I feel as if they complement each other very well.
Let’s start off by talking about microdosing as it’s definitely the more beginner friendly way to consume psilocybin. A microdose is essentially consuming psilocybin in a sub perceptual dose. This means that you should not be able to “feel” the effects and ultimately will be able to go about your day as normal. For me, microdosing tends to have some staple effects outside of it’s natural healing benefits. Some of these include feeling more energized, creative, focused, and just more energetically aligned with my surroundings. Even when consuming the substance every third day (which is a common microdosing protocol) I notice the effects even on the days when I have not taken my microdose. It’s a strange phenomenon but how I like to describe it is basically you become that more energetic, creative, and aligned person throughout the entirety of your microdosing journey. On top of this, I have also noticed that the effects are lasting even after stopping the protocol. I took a break of upwards of three months last year and still felt as if I was microdosing. While it looks as if this might not be the best substance to build a business model off of, it’s actually amazing to have found something I do not have to be dependent on! With that being said, I haven’t even touched on the actual benefits of microdosing, what I mentioned above were more like pleasant side effects. Essentially, microdosing allows me to bring a little bit of my “tripping” mindset into my everyday life. No, I’m not talking about kladescopes and breathing walls, but rather the underlying principles of the substance. I call them underlying principles because through all of my experiences with mushrooms, love, gratitude, selflessness, and appreciation of life have always been present. This mindset helps me not only to connect deeper with others, but myself, and really helped me to shift my life into focusing on what truly matters to me, instead of endless worries about finances and societal issues. To sum up the microdosing experience, it’s like bridging the connection between you and what truly matters while being stone cold sober.
Macrodosing psilocybin is vastly different from a microdose, however it does have a few similarities. I think the most prominent being that the changes in your mindset and attitude don’t wear off as the effects do. I notice myself feeling more thankful, happy, energetic, and connected for months after a macrodose and have absolutely no desire to go back until I have fully integrated the lesson from my previous experience. With that being said, macrodosing is a very intense experience and should not be taken lightly. If you are new to mushrooms, always start small and work your way up. Probably my best tip is to always have a trip sitter when diving into a dose that you experience visuals on (1.5 grams+). Although sometimes you might feel like you didn’t need anyone there, for the times you do, you will be so glad they were. Now that that’s out of the way let’s get onto the benefits! I like to think of macrodosing as opening yourself up to a life changing experience. There is no way to explain it as every experience is vastly different, however in every case it was something that truly changed my life. For example, my first ever experience with mushrooms made me realize how important it is to work in a career that we are passionate about, while my most recent trip made me incorporate longer breathwork/meditation sessions, daily workouts, and healthier meals into my life. While the lessons were different, both experiences showed me what I needed to do next for myself and that is how I use macrodosing. As a tool for self growth. Now, you might be thinking, “you should already know to eat healthy, exercise, and do what you love”! And you are right in thinking that! However, the way mushrooms teach you these things truly does stick, and I’m proud to say that ever since my last “trip” I have not slipped up on any of my goals. It essentially made it easy for me to incorporate these healthy lifestyle habits into my daily life. Macrodoses are truly life changing.
Which one is for you?
At the end of the day, you don’t really have to choose! I like to microdose for the months following a macrodose as I feel it helps me to integrate better. With that being said, if you have to choose, you really have to decide what you are looking for. If you’re looking for a life changing experience and are prepared to come face to face with your personal demons, then macrodosing is definitely for you. However, if you aren’t as adventurous and looking for something that will slowly help you become the best version of yourself, then microdosing will be more up your alley. Ultimately there is no wrong answer, I am just sitting here, writing this blog glad that there is a future of open minded individuals ready to break the stigma on what these substances really are. Medicine.
