Mushrooms,,, Are they just for tripping?

Mushrooms are truly one of the most interesting things mother nature has to offer. They can be used in everyday dishes, can provide nutrients for the body that cannot be found almost anywhere else, as well as be used to full out hallucinate! Being that mushrooms as a whole can be used in so many different ways, I thought it would be interesting to compare the two main categories of mushrooms, psychedelic and functional mushrooms!

Psychedelic mushrooms are probably what most people reading this blog are familiar with already. These mushrooms contain psilocybin and are known for inducing hallucinatory, dream-like states that ultimately leave the user with an unforgettable experience. What is really striking about these types of mushrooms is that most people who decide to consume psilocybin, are left with not only a profound experience, but a teaching of some sort that helps them look at life a little differently. Through these expanded perspectives, we are able to see our personal issues in a new light and in many cases learn to cope with them. While the promise of this substance becomes more and more rectified through our emerging scientific trials, the intensities of these experiences cannot be understated, and it is definitely not for everyone. If I’m not tripping, then what’s the point?

On the other side of the mushroom category coin I would put functional mushrooms. Functional mushrooms will not get you high at all but they come with their own plethora of benefits! While there are far too many species of functional mushrooms, all with vastly different benefits, we cannot go over them all; however, there are a few I could use as examples. Turkey tail is known for its immune boosting properties, Reishi assists with stress, and Lion’s mane assists with brain health. While all of this sounds great on paper, sometimes the benefits of certain natural medicines aren’t, in practice, as effective as their packaging makes it sound. In terms of functional mushrooms however, their provided nutrients are truly potent and will have an effect. For example, a 2008 double blind study found lion’s mane to significantly improve cognitive functions in adults compared to the placebo group. To go even further, a more recent 2019 study found lion’s mane to be a safe and convenient method to prevent dementia.

Which one is right for me?

At the end of the day, both psychedelic and functional mushrooms have a plethora of benefits that range on quite opposite ends of the spectrum. To put it simply, magic mushrooms can be thought of as healing for the mind, while functional mushrooms can be thought of as healing for the body. Because of this, it really isn’t necessary to choose, and adding both into your wellness routine can be very beneficial.
